Wisdom Teeth Extraction Aftercare for Faster Healing

Hi! Dr Jimmy here from Diggers Rest Dental House, part of the Dental House Group.

If you’re preparing for wisdom teeth removal, you’ve probably heard a few horror stories, and you might be wondering, how can I recover faster and avoid the drama? Great question. Let’s walk through it together.

First things first: follow your aftercare instructions carefully. It might sound basic, but it’s one of the most important things you can do. This includes when to take your medication, how often to apply cold compresses, and when to come back in for your check-up.

Right after the procedure, you’ll have a gauze pad placed over the site, keep it there for the first hour, then replace it as needed. If bleeding continues, bite gently on a clean piece of gauze for another 30 minutes. Just remember, no spitting or using straws in the first 24 hours. That suction can dislodge the blood clot and lead to a painful dry socket.

You can also manage swelling with a cold compress. Apply it to your cheeks in 15-minute intervals during the first day or two. It’ll help bring the swelling down and make things more comfortable.

As for food, stick to the soft stuff like yoghurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, soup. Nothing hot, spicy, or crunchy, please! And when drinking, skip the straw and drink straight from a glass. Water’s best, and steer clear of sugary or fizzy drinks.

When it comes to cleaning your mouth, don’t rinse or spit for the first 24 hours. After that, gently swish with warm salt water, just nothing too strong like regular mouthwash.

One more thing, getting some proper rest matters. Give your body time to heal. Take it easy for a couple of days and skip anything physically demanding.

And of course, keep an eye out for anything unusual. If you notice major swelling, ongoing pain, fever, or anything that just feels off, reach out to your dentist straight away. Early care can prevent bigger issues down the track.

Wisdom teeth recovery doesn’t have to be rough. Follow these tips, and you’ll be back on track in no time.
