One Visit Instead of Three
The traditional crown process means at least two appointments spread over several weeks, a temporary crown in between, and impressions that aren’t exactly comfortable. CEREC changes that by designing and milling your crown in the same visit, ready to be fitted before you leave.
What Are CEREC Same Day Crowns?
CEREC uses computer-aided design and in-office milling to create a custom ceramic crown during a single appointment. Digital scanning replaces traditional impressions, and the crown is milled from a solid ceramic block while you wait, typically taking around 15-20 minutes.
Suitability depends on the condition of the tooth, how much structure remains, and the location and extent of the damage. Not every situation is appropriate for same-day fabrication, and we’ll advise clearly if a different approach better suits your case.
Is a Same-Day Crown the Right Approach for You?

What Happens During Your Appointment
When CEREC is appropriate, the entire process takes place in a single visit of around two to three hours.
Assessment
The tooth is examined to confirm suitability for same-day fabrication versus a traditional approach. (First portion of visit, typically 15-20 minutes)
Tooth preparation
Damaged or decayed structure is carefully removed and the tooth is shaped to receive the crown. (Same visit, typically 30-45 minutes)
Digital scanning
A digital scanner captures detailed 3D images of the prepared tooth and surrounding area, replacing traditional impression materials. (Same visit, typically 10-15 minutes)
Crown design
Specialised software is used to design your crown to match the shape, size, and colour of your surrounding teeth. (Same visit, typically 10-15 minutes)
In-office milling
Your crown is milled from a solid ceramic block using a precision in-office machine. (Same visit, typically 15-20 minutes)
Fitting and bonding
The crown is tried in, adjusted for fit and bite, then permanently bonded and polished. (Same visit, typically 20-30 minutes)

Risks & Recovery
CEREC crowns are a well-established restoration option, though as with any dental treatment, there are risks to be aware of
Possible risks include:
- Temporary sensitivity after placement
- Minor gum tenderness around the treated tooth
- Possibility of crown fracture or loosening under heavy biting forces
- In some cases, further treatment such as root canal therapy may be needed if the tooth is more compromised than initially apparent
Recovery considerations:
- Most patients return to normal activities the same day
- Sensitivity usually settles within a few days
- Avoiding very hard foods initially helps protect the new crown
- Regular check-ups support long-term success of the restoration
